5/19/2010: Scouting

Wednesday we had a family business meeting out at Glendora, and I was able to do some stand maintenance with my uncle Gary (AKA "Unc"). Before heading out, we chowed down on some grilled bass fillets and talked about our plan of attack.

We rode around to all of the lock-on stands and loosened the platforms from the tree as well as the climbing sticks. This is done to prevent our gear from breaking when the trees swell in the summertime heat. While I handled the higher elevation work, Unc took care of taping up the holes in the bottom of the feeders. This prevents wasps and other insects from getting too comfortable between now and next hunting season.

While riding around, we saw a fair amount of wildlife including a decent buck that was bedded where Angus Ditch Rd intersects with Mid-La-North and several does that were bedded near where Muscadine Rd intersects with Peachtree Rd.

The coolest part of the outing came on our way back to the camp after finishing up our stand work. I was driving the Bad Boy when I noticed something crossing the trail ahead. It turned out to be a small alligator snapping turtle. I had never seen one out of the water before, and we were able to get out and even provoke a few lightning fast snaps from it. To think those turtles grow to such immense proportions and swim in the same waters that we do... Gives me the heebie-jeebies!

Overall we had a great outing. It is so great to have Unc back home again.

haha...yes, it'll make you stop and think about swimming with 'em. I've seen them 10X this size...huge. My cousin traps beaver in a nearby pond and has seen triangular shaped "bite-sized" holes out of the webbing of their feet...OUCH!! :)

Sounds like another adventures day out at Glendora!

btw - I don't think I'd be swimming with those fellas, I like all my toes right where they are :-)

That's a big ugly turtle right there.... You've got all kinds of interesting critters down there at Glendora. Very cool stuff.
