My First Six Pointer

It was December 11, 2010, at about 7:15am Saturday morning on private hunting land in Germantown, NY. It was a beautiful crisp and cool morning. I see a buck about 450 yards away moving along the soybeans with his head down to the ground following a doe trail. I grunt and call at him but he kept moving away from me. I lose sight of him as he goes into the woods. About 10 minutes later I see him coming out about 500 yards away going back across the soybeans. I lose him in the brush. About 7:45am while I was looking at a bunch of turkeys feeding to my right this guy pops out of nowhere at about 200 yards in front of me crossing back over the soybeans at an angle toward my left. He gets closer and he stops looks right at me while I had the crosshairs on him. I knew he made me so I took the shot. He kicked his rear legs like a mule and he ran into the woods. It happened so fast. That was the fun part.

About 10 minutes later I get down off the stand and I walk over to where I thought he was standing when I shot him. I started looking for him or a sign of blood. I see nothing. I cross into and through the woods and see nothing. I cross over a frozen stream onto an embankment on the other side and look around. Still nothing. Now I’m looking for him for about 30 minutes and I’m getting pissed. I knew I hit him when he kicked. I back track and call my hunting buddy. He pulls up into the field with a pickup and we start looking together. Another 20 minutes and still nothing. Now I’m thinking I missed him. I decided to go further away from my stand and started circling and walking toward the woods. Lo and behold I see a some drops of blood on some ice on the frozen stream. I take a few steps forward and there is more and more blood. I call out to my buddy and he joins me. We start tracking the blood. The blood trail was unbelievable – it looked like a murder scene – worse than the OJ case. I spotted him curled up on the ground at about 20 yards into the woods. It turns out I shot him low through both lungs and split his heart. This guy didn’t last 10 seconds after he was shot. Unfortunately I misjudged the distance he was from my stand and where he ran into the woods. Afterwards I ranged it to from where he ran into the woods to my stand at about 175 yards when I shot him. Now he's sitting pretty in vacuum sealed bags in my freezer next to his girlfriend.
